North Texas Preview

Friday, November 20, 2009

North Texas is coming up, and for as little that we've heard about Army football this year we've probably heard less out of Denton, TX. There is a newspaper blog about the Mean Green on the Denton Record Chronicle website.

North Texas is finding it tough to win games this year, still the Mean Green can score points. The other side of that coin is that the mean Green give up an average of 38 ppg. After giving up 328 rush yards to VMI any team that can gain yardage will be viewed as a threat.
North Texas has their own Achilles heel: Run defense.

Sal Interdonato took the VMI game pretty tough.

This was the game everyone should have played.

Army coach Rich Ellerson should have emptied his bench in the fourth quarter.

Wins against VMI, a two-win team one level below Army, should be a given.

It would show Army's ready to take the next step to becoming a winner.

Well, there's still a way to go after Army's home finale.

Army was in a dogfight to the end. The defense needed to make two stands in the last six minutes to seal a 22-17 win.

I try not to get too bent out of shape about the W-L record considering it's Coach Ellerson's first year and he hasn't had a chance to recruit his own players.

Rich Ellerson is working to patch up the Black Knights' kickoff coverage.

Yep, it's a trap game.

"In terms of skill and a quarterback (Riley Dodge) who can operate within a system and a running back (Lance Dunbar) who can break your heart, this is as dangerous an outfit as we have played, and our guys know that," Army coach Rich Ellerson said. "There is no taking anything lightly. Are you kidding me? We know how hard this is. To make this a fair fight, and for us to have a chance in this we have to be a great turnover team. We have to be a team that doesn't blink and executes without errors or delays and can do that for 60 minutes."

As for preview, go check out USA Today's Army football notes.

Army took VMI too lightly, can they avoid the trap on Saturday?

Phil Steele thinks so...
